Did you know that there is a World Bee Day.

A day (May 20th to be precise) designated by the United Nations to celebrate the importance of bees. Those tiny fuzzy creatures are so very important to all of us – they should be celebrated – and protected!

You know I love to draw bees – they appear in almost all my creations. That is partly because they are pretty fun to draw – but also because the more people see them, they more they remember them.

Why do you need to remember the bees? Well….

Bees (and other pollinators!) help plants grow – plants that produce our food. And not just honey. Apples, pears, almonds, squashes, coffee…. all need pollinators.

Sadly though, the bees aren’t safe.

Their numbers are declining. Loss of their natural habitat, increasing and changing pesticides, climate change all threaten our bees. Here in the UK 35 (yes, 35!) species of bees are under threat. (No bees – no coffee!).

But we can all do something to help, here are a few ideas….

Plant flowers!

Especially native flowers. And you don’t have to have a big garden – you could try a window box, a small pot by the back door, a hanging basket. They all make a difference.

Mow Less

Let that lawn grow! Help pollinators find shelter and a place to feed – so it’s a great excuse for not getting that mower out every week.

Avoid using “bug killer” pesticides.

The bug killer doesn’t just target the bugs you think are pesky – but actually, are they really pesky. All critters have their role to play in our eco system… maybe they are helping more than you know!

Happy World Bee Day!!

(And don’t forget, there are lots of bees available in my shop – why not take a peek?)

Much Love,

Jac xx
