Meet Walter the Whale. He just loves swimming. And his big, huge smile will cheer up any tea or coffee break I am sure. This is a great gift idea for lovers of coffee or tea – but also nature lovers.
SIZE
This coaster is approximately 10cm in diameter (approximately) and about 0.5cm in depth.
MY PROCESS
These start life as a terribly boring plain white, unglazed ceramic coaster – then I get my hands on them!
I start by drawing a design. Once I am happy with it – I make it permanent using a permanent ink pen. The pencil is rubbed off – leaving me with a nice clean outline for the colour stages.
Stage one of the colour is paint – I use a mix of watercolour and acrylic paint to get the colours I want (I do love bright, as you may have noticed). Stage 2 is the detail – little details I like to add, like shading and texture – and that is done using coloured pencil.
With the colour complete, the final coaster is then finished with several coats of a matt varnish to protect the design.
Finally, I add little felt “feet” to the reverse side, so stop the coaster from sliding on your table, oh and one of my little hand drawn and painted labels.
And that’s it – it’s ready to go!
NOTES – each coaster is drawn by hand, every single one will be unique – so the one you receive may not be identical to the one in the pictures.
